Sue Ryder, Golders Green. The sign stated that all paperbacks were £1, but a sticker on the actual book said £2. A confusing state of affairs. I asked the lady at the till, who confirmed the £1 rule and removed the misleading sticker. The purchase proceeded without further incident.
Her Lover by Albert Cohen is 974 pages long and as such will take me a while to read. It was published in 1968, but is set in 1930s Geneva and details the lives of social climbers connected to the League of Nations. This is an English translation from the original French version (published as
Belle du Seigneur).
